The Bute Street Congregation

Faith and Service in Norfolk

Established in July 1800, First Baptist is Norfolk’s oldest Baptist congregation. In 1958, when the city closed schools to resist integration, the church opened its doors to tutor the students known as the Norfolk Seventeen.

During Dr. Murray’s tenure, the congregation expanded programs for young people, older adults, families, and military members. Its outreach included tutoring, a soup kitchen, and a clothes closet. In February 2024, Rev. Jerry L. Holmes was installed as First Baptist’s 20th pastor.
